A USEFUL ESTIMATE
Pixels set the limit.
Paper sets the scale.
Pixels per inch (PPI) measures how tightly your image's pixels fit on paper. A larger print spreads the same pixels further apart.
What is a good result?
300 PPI is a useful target for detailed prints viewed close up. Between 150 and 299 PPI can work for many prints, especially at a distance. Below 150 PPI, fine detail is more limited. These are guidelines, not a print-quality guarantee.
Does this check sharpness or change the file?
No. We calculate from pixel dimensions and your chosen placement. Blur, compression, paper, printer settings and viewing distance also affect the result. Your original file stays unchanged.
Why does the DPI number in my file differ?
Embedded DPI is a suggested print instruction. This tool calculates the effective PPI at the size you choose, including any cropping. Changing a metadata number does not add image detail.
